Most people don't replace a boiler because they fancy a new one. It either packs up in the middle of winter, or it's limping along and the repair bills have started to add up. Either way you want a straight answer about what it'll cost and how long you'll be without heating.

We'll look at what you've got, what the house actually needs, and quote for the work. If your current boiler has years left in it we'll say so.

What the job includes

  • Combi, system and conventional boilers
  • Straight swaps and full system changes
  • Old boiler taken away and disposed of
  • Gas supply and flue checked and brought up to standard
  • System filled, pressure-tested and balanced
  • Controls set up and explained before we leave

Choosing between a combi and a system boiler

If you've got one bathroom and a modest hot water demand, a combi is usually the sensible answer: no cylinder, no loft tank, hot water on demand. Bigger houses with two or more bathrooms often do better on a system boiler and a cylinder, because a combi can struggle to serve two showers at once.

It also depends on what's already there. Converting from a conventional system to a combi means removing tanks and re-running some pipework, which adds to the job. We'll tell you what's involved rather than quote for the option that suits us.

How long it takes

A like-for-like swap in the same spot is often a day. Moving the boiler to a different wall, or changing system type, usually runs into a second day. We'll tell you which it is before we start, not halfway through.

Warranty registration

New boilers come with a manufacturer's warranty, and it needs registering after the installation to be valid. We handle that, and you'll want to keep up the annual service afterwards, because most manufacturers require it.

Questions we get asked

Will you move the boiler somewhere else in the house?
Usually yes, though it means new gas, water and flue runs, so it costs more than fitting in the same place. Kitchens, utility rooms, garages and airing cupboards are all common spots. There are rules about flue positions near windows and boundaries, which we'll check on the visit.
Do I need a magnetic filter?
It's a good idea on almost any system. It catches the iron oxide sludge that circulates in older radiators and pipework, which is what tends to block up a new heat exchanger. Some manufacturers ask for one as a warranty condition.
Can you fit a boiler I've bought myself?
We'd rather supply it. If something turns out to be faulty, it's much simpler to sort out when the boiler and the labour came from the same place.
What paperwork do I get?
A gas safety certificate for the installation, the manufacturer's warranty registration, and a Building Regulations compliance notice.
